Convert Slovakia IBANs to their BIC
Every Slovakia IBAN is 24 characters long and starts with SK. The bank identifier embedded inside it is what resolves to a BIC/SWIFT code, the bank's name and address, and its SEPA reachability.
The Slovakia IBAN format
Example of a valid Slovakia IBAN:
SK31 1200 0000 1987 4263 7541
| Segment | Length | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Country code | 2 | SK | Always SK |
| Check digits | 2 | 31 | ISO 7064 mod-97 checksum over the whole IBAN |
| Bank code | 4 | 1200 | Numeric code identifying the Slovak bank |
| Account prefix | 6 | 000019 | Optional prefix of the domestic account number, zero-padded |
| Account number | 10 | 8742637541 | Numeric account identifier |
Slovakia shares its IBAN structure with the Czech Republic (a legacy of the common banking system), but has used the euro since 2009.
How to get the BIC from a Slovakia IBAN
Validate the IBAN
Check the length (exactly 24 characters for SK) and the ISO 7064 mod-97 checksum. Both are local computations — no lookup needed yet.
Extract the bank identifier
The bank code (4 characters) inside the BBAN identifies the institution holding the account.
Resolve it to a BIC
Map the bank identifier to the institution's BIC via registry data — or send the IBAN to the API and get BIC, bank details and SEPA flags in one response.
Resolve it with one API call
Send the IBAN to POST /v1/convert and get back the BIC, bank details and the four SEPA reachability flags. Invalid and not-found lookups are always free.
